How to read a PDF e-book on Android
Updated
Short answer
Open the downloaded PDF from your Files or Downloads app — Android opens PDFs directly. To read it like a book and keep your place across devices, upload it to Google Play Books; to keep it as a file on every device, save it to Google Drive.
Open it straight away
Once the PDF is downloaded, open Files (or Downloads) and tap it. Android opens PDFs without anything extra, and most phones offer to open them in Google Drive's viewer as well.
Add it to Google Play Books
If you will read the book over several days, Google Play Books is the better home. It lets you upload your own PDFs to your library, remembers where you stopped, and shows the same book on your other devices signed in to the same Google account.
- Open Google Play Books.
- Find the upload option in your library and choose the PDF.
- It appears in your library with your other books.
Or keep it in Google Drive
Saving the PDF to Google Drive keeps it as a file you can open on any device — phone, tablet or laptop — and makes a copy you will not lose with the phone.
Reading comfortably
- Turn the phone sideways so the page fills the width.
- Pinch to zoom on the text column.
- A tablet shows a book-sized page at its natural size.
